Doctor Who Fans Applaud Progressive Trans Storyline For Yasmin Finney’s Rose
“I would burn down the world for you, darling. Anyone has a go, I will be there and I will descend.”
-Donna Noble to Rose
Doctor Who, which, like other modern television series has been steadily trending towards having diverse characters and storylines. The long-running BBC series has expanded to include LGBTQ+ characters, a female Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), and is soon to welcome the first queer person of color (Ncuti Gatwa) to portray the infamous Timelord. Most recently, however, the series introduced us to (a new and different) Rose, a transgender girl played by transgender actress Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper), who we discover is the daughter of former Doctor companion, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) in a new series of new Doctor Who specials. David Tennant, originally the Tenth Doctor has temporarily resumed his role as The Doctor leading up to Ncuti Gatwa assuming the role of The Doctor on Christmas Day.
Fans of the series have been applauding the series’ portrayal of Rose in the first of the new specials, The Star-Beast, and its sensitive portrayal of transgender people and the issues they routinely deal with, such as misgendering, deadnaming, and family struggles with getting used to their new names, pronouns, etc. Fans of the series also applauded the supportive nature of the characters, especially that of The Doctor and Donna towards her in the episode by being sensitive to her needs for validation and recognizing the importance of not assuming other beings’ gender and pronoun usage. Rose’s transgender identity is even woven into the plot, with her transgender “non-binary” identity helping save Donna from certain death.
