Happy 100th birthday, Stan Lee! The man was born on December 28, 1922. While DC released Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee (which features his interpretations of DC heroes from his Just Imagine… series) to commemorate, Disney+ announced a new documentary about the famed comic writer that will be coming next year.

Simply titled Stan Lee, the new documentary will be released in 2023, and its teaser was released on Wednesday. Lee, who died in 2018, created many of Marvel’s characters that debuted in the ‘60s and ‘70s, such as Iron Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Thor, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Nick Fury. Lee also formed The Avengers.

This will not be the first documentary about him; that would be With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, which was released in 2010. Not only could this new documentary factor in the final 8 years of his life, even if a bit generalized, but the popularity of many of his characters has grown so much in the last dozen years. The way people view Marvel as a company has shifted drastically since the last documentary; in fact, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was only halfway through Phase One when With Great Power was released, and now titles are known through Phase Six in 2026. What better way to show how his legacy has been solidified? It will certainly be intriguing to see what approach Stan Lee takes in comparison, and how it uses the new material and details the old.
