Disney+ To Release Boba Fett Special In November
It seems like it was just the other day when the streaming service Disney+ had its launch. And with that came the premiere of the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, which has received critical acclaim from many fans. That all happened nearly two years ago, on November 12, 2019. Naturally, November 12 is considered Disney+ Day, a day that will be commemorated by Disney in just a month and a half.
One of the things that Disney announced for that day pertains to the character of Boba Fett. Specifically, they have said that it will be a special about "the origins and legacy" of the character. It sounds like this will be from an out-of-universe perspective rather than an in-universe perspective. Many fans know that Boba Fett was originally introduced in the animated segment of the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, before he made his live-action debut in The Empire Strikes Back.

After appearing in many EU stories posing possible origin stories for him and saying he survived the sarlacc, his origins were finally explored in the 2002 prequel film Attack of the Clones, which reveals him to be a clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett whom Jango considers a son. Alongside appearances in publication and video games, Boba Fett made further appearances in The Clone Wars TV series. But last year, The Mandalorian season 2 confirmed that, canonically, Boba Fett survived the sarlacc pit.
Boba Fett's triumphant return in that series was met with positive reception. Many viewers were surprised and delighted to see the post-credit scene in the finale, which revealed that a spin-off series titled The Book of Boba Fett would be released in December 2021. Clearly, the special that will be released on Disney+ Day is designed to generate hype for this upcoming series. For The Mandalorian, it is normal to release a trailer a month ahead of the premiere. So releasing a trailer around the time of this special would make sense.
But as for the special itself, people are speculating that it will be in the vein of the Marvel Studios Legends series on Disney+, in which each episode is essentially a primer designed to refamiliarize viewers with different players appearing in the Disney+ Marvel shows. These episodes tend to be 5-10 minutes, so it is possible that the special will be that short. Then again, perhaps Lucasfilm and Disney can surprise us and release a special as long as an episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian. Episodes of that have been around a half hour, though a special in the second season went over an hour. So the length of the special is really anyone's guess.
In any case, it is nice that fans are getting a special focused on one of the franchise's most popular characters. Boba Fett has gone through various interpretations and portrayals over the years and managed to have such a huge staying power in the minds of the fans. With this bounty hunter getting his own TV series, his popularity will not be going away anytime soon. And on top of that, we have no shortage of Disney+ shows coming from the Star Wars franchise. With so many shows, there is sure to be something for everyone (with the anime shorts anthology Star Wars: Visions being a recent example of that). We truly are in a golden age of Star Wars television.
