Disney+ Lineup Debuting ‘Oswald The Lucky Rabbit’ This April
Before Mickey ever entered the picture, Walt Disney charmed audiences with a cartoon bunny named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. After 26 shorts, Disney lost the rights to the character to Universal after one of his own animators arranged the deal. Walt was forced to turn to the iconic Mickey Mouse as the face of the company.
Many decades later, Bob Iger was hired by the company and later promoted to CEO. He made it his mission to rescue Oswald from what is now NBC. After a bizarre trade, Al Micheals, a talented sportscaster for Walt’s first creation, Oswald rejoined the company and starred in the short Get A Horse and the Epic Mickey video games as well as appearing as a costumed character in the theme parks.
After this brief reception, the character was largely forgotten again until now. Disney Plus announced a new Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short will come to the streaming site on April 14, 2023. The short is part of Disney’s larger 100 Years of Wonder Celebration and brings Eric Goldberg in as a director and Dorothy McKim as the producer. This short marks the first Oswald-centric cartoon in 94 years and will, hopefully, serve as a better homecoming than his recent appearances that have already faded into obscurity.
