Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, Lays Out Clear Path For Hulu To Merge With Disney+
Disney, the industry’s giant looks unstoppable at the moment. Their CEO, Bob Chapek, confirmed his desire to merge Hulu into the Disney family recently over the D23 conference. The company is looking forward to the acquisition which allegedly will take place at the beginning of 2024. Even if Chapek has stated he “would love to” proceed with the buy earlier the date has been set and the merging must wait another year at the very least.
Bob Chapek highlighted how surprised he is regarding the flexibility of a brand such as Disney. It cannot be denied that Disney has evolved through the years, having very progressive and inclusive series such as The Owl House which has a Latin-descendant protagonist who is also openly bisexual. Taking small steps away from the ‘all ages’ programming the executives at Disney are convinced that adding Hulu and all its programming to their platform will be beneficial and will certainly expand the company’s horizons.
Pricing was another topic discussed and not in a way most customers will enjoy. It was emphasized, maybe a bit too much, how they consider the current costs of the streaming service to be “too low for what they offer”. Disney+ is reportedly increasing its price to $10.99 next month for an ad-free plan while allowing customers to stay on a $7.99 pricing but with the addition of ads to their experience.
Streaming services were initially created to avoid unnecessary ads and to have content at the customer’s disposal. Now, watching many of these platforms move to have add-supported versions of their services, makes us question what will be the next step and how it will benefit or affect us.
With only three years on the streaming market, Disney has achieved a lot of progress and various successes. With the addition of Hulu to their roster of entertaining they are very likely to continue expanding and gaining customers. All of this is exclusively directed to the United States market, which is the only region one can stream content on Hulu. Only time will tell what Disney’s expansion plan looks like and what will the company do to continue being a worldwide brand, now taking over the streaming world.
