Directors Discuss Making 'Dungeons And Dragons' A Reality On The Silver Screen

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is releasing at the end of this month. The movie follows an unlikely group of adventurers to retrieve a long-lost relic. As the premiere date draws near, the film directors sat down with Variety to provide insight into how they are bringing the popular tabletop roleplaying game to movie theaters.
The last Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) film from 2000 did not do so well. Not even Jeremy Irons could save the movie. However, this new film cost $151 million and passed through the hands of many screenwriters and directors before landing in the hands of the current directors, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The duo, who wrote the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming, decided to tweak the tropes of classic fantasy storytelling, instead of spoofing it. This idea won over a stellar cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, and someone completely new to D&D, Hugh Grant. Hugh Grant even said the script was accessible for someone unfamiliar with D&D.

Daley discussed the difficulty of adapting the beloved tabletop role-playing game:
“Sometimes people take it too seriously and want to embrace the more dramatic elements of it. To us, that’s ridiculous, because you’ve got literally brains with four legs — you know, creatures that were so obviously written with a wink. On the flip side, if you try to get too goofy with it, you’re also doing it a disservice.”
Goldstein further explained the approach they are taking with this movie:
“The movie is almost like the dungeon master. The plot twists that we throw at our characters are what a DM would do at the table, just to screw with you and make it more fun. It was our way of capturing what goes on when you’re playing D&D, without breaking the fourth wall or becoming meta with it.”
The two directors hope their movie will win over even the most hardcore of fans and newbies, just like it did with Hugh Grant.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves releases in theaters on March 31st.
