Diego Luna Has Some Thoughts About Returning To 'Andor' In A Recent Interview
In a recent interview for Entertainment Weekly, actor Diego Luna expressed how he felt returning to the screen as rebellion spy Cassian Andor in the new Andor series. Luna mentioned that a 12-episode series leaves more room for character development, something he thought he wouldn’t be able to do in Star Wars anymore. Remembering the moment he received a phone call asking him to reprise his role as Andor once again, he said that he “just wanted to explore many things that I thought about while I was shooting that a film would never allow you to explore”. He adds to that arguing that “it’s not about what happens, it’s about how it happens (...) it’s about depth, it’s about real people”.
Alongside Luna were his co-star Genevieve O’Reilly, who is going to play senator and rebellion leader Mon Mothma once again, and producer Sanne Wohlenberg. Wohlenberg mentions that Andor is set in such an important era of Star Wars, one in which the rebellion is still being formed. She says that storytelling in such a period of the saga is “just a real opportunity to be daring and brave”. Luna agreed with the statement, arguing that Andor is not just about his character’s adventures, the community around him or the events that are going to take place within the series. Not only the show he’s going to star in, but the whole Star Wars IP represents something bigger. He commented that “Star Wars is always like that, it’s always telling messages that have a lot to do with what we’re living”. Luna thus sees important connections between our day-to-day occurrences and those of the Star Wars universe.

Andor tells the story of Cassian Andor’s involvement with the growing rebel alliance five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). The story is likely to be set in the formative years of the rebellion and will feature returning characters like Mon Mothma (O’Reilly), who also appeared in the 2016 movie. Mothma was featured in live-action in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005) and in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Other actors that are confirmed in the series are Stellan Skarsgård and Alan Tudyk as K-2SO. Tudyk, although, stated back in January that the beloved security droid will not be part of the first season.
The show’s timeline could mix with other stories like those of Star Wars: Rebels, set in the same period in the saga. Rebels characters were present in Rogue One, with Hera being mentioned in an announcement, Chopper can be seen in the back during a Yavin 4 scene, and the ship “Ghost” is part of the rebel fleet during the Battle of Scarif. With all those connections and Dave Filoni’s heavy involvement with Star Wars in general for the past few years, nothing can be discarded at this point.
The first season will premiere on Disney+ on August 31st, and a second season has been already confirmed.
