Despite recent political controversies between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Disney Parks Chief Josh D’Amaro is confident in the company’s future. The chief confirmed that the battles between the state and the company haven't hurt their budget, and Disney is still on track with their $17 billion spending plans. However, Disney has abandoned their plans to build a new facility in Florida. D’Amaro cited the change of leadership when returning CEO Bob Iger took over for Bob Chapek and the change in business conditions for the canceled plans. This change of plans prevents 2,000 employees from moving to the new campus. D’Amaro explained, “We have new leadership in place, and No. 2, business conditions have changed pretty significantly, so taking all that into account, we said at this point in time we’re going to reverse that decision.”

D’Amaro continued, “We’re thinking pretty aggressively about where we can take things in Florida. I’m excited about what’s in store.” The feud between Disney and DeSantis started when Disney Ceo Bob Chapek challenged a bill in Florida that opponents dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The bill restricts education about sexual orientation in public schools. Disney strongly advocated against the bill, cementing its place in the Florida culture wars. The company went so far as to file a lawsuit against DeSantis for using his power to retaliate against Disney.

In other news, Disney decided to close its Galactic Star Cruiser hotel, the immersive Star Wars-themed resort. D’Amaro called the resort a “pretty stunning asset” that “raised the bar” for the parks. Unfortunately for Disney, the resort didn’t meet the parks’ expectations. According to D’Amaro, “It didn’t perform exactly like we hoped it would perform. So, despite the fact that this was a never-before-seen attraction, we felt it was time to sunset it.”
