DEBUNKED: No, Disney Plus Is Not Retconning The Sequel Trilogy
There has been a rumor within the Star Wars community that Disney and Lucasfilm want to remake the entire sequel trilogy. The films Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker were the trilogy to close up the entire Skywalker saga.
The sequel trilogy introduced a new generation to Star Wars, yet it also received a bunch of backlash from many fans of the prequels, and of the original trilogy. The remake rumor suggests Lucasfilm making a three-season series on Disney+ that would rewrite the events of the sequel trilogy. Each season would represent a movie from the sequel trilogy, meaning season one would be about The Force Awakens, season two would replace The Last Jedi, and season three would take the space of The Rise of Skywalker.
Some fans speculate that Lucasfilm will be using archive footage from The Force Awakens. The footage is said to include a ten-minute scene with the legendary trio of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa together onscreen. Some of the new characters like Rey, Kylo Ren, and Finn would also be returning for this so-called series, yet fans aren’t sure if they would be played by the same actors. Some actors like Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams have said they would love to come back and play their characters in the future. However, such actors like Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver have seemed done with Star Wars, at least for now.
This rumor has been going on for a while now, and many people claim it to be real, yet there has been no confirmation from Disney or Lucasfilm to prove the veracity of this so-called reboot series. Lucasfilm is currently developing several projects that could potentially be tied with the sequel trilogy, yet they are dedicating most of their time to their new Disney+ exclusive content. Lucasfilm is currently working on such live-action projects as season three of The Mandalorian, one of its spin-offs The Book of Boba Fett, and the highly anticipated miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi which will tie in with the prequel era of Star Wars.
The sequel trilogy has received mixed reviews from critics and Star Wars fans. The films have amazing cinematic moments and breathtaking visual effects, but they had a lot of storytelling problems and poor character development, according to many Star Wars fans. Lots of fans also believe that if JJ Abrams had stayed throughout the entire trilogy, the films would have been better received by the Star Wars community. Some believe that Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi changed the entire trilogy as it abandoned several plot points from The Force Awakens. The Last Jedi was considered by some to be a bold movie, since it took us away from the so-called “Star Wars filming form.” Yet others took it as an offense to the saga, as some of them disagree with some of the creative decisions, such as the character arc for Luke Skywalker.
Lots of the angry fans were hopeful when The Rise of Skywalker was released, yet some of the same fans were even more disappointed by the film itself, due to what they believe to be even more poor creative decisions. Love or hate the sequel trilogy, they are part of the amazing phenomenon called Star Wars. Neither the prequel trilogy nor the original trilogy are perfect films, yet all nine films are part of all of us fans. It is true that lots of fans have their own preferences across the nine films, yet we can all agree on one thing: Star Wars is for all ages, and its something we can teach to our children, and their children’s children.
