20th Century Studios IE released a new trailer for the film, A Haunting in Venice last week. The setting is post-WWII, Venice Italy, and stars Kelly Reilly as Rowena Drake, Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, Michelle Yeoh as Mrs. Reynolds, and Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver, a close friend of Poirot’s.

The trailer opens with Ariadne walking and talking with Hercule in the bustling Venice streets. “I am the smartest person I have ever met and even I can’t figure it out. So, I came to the second.” Naturally, our detective is suspicious. Ariadne proceeds to explain that she has come across a fake psychic, that she cannot discredit. Poirot doesn’t believe in psychics either. With creepy music playing softly over the dialogue, Ariadne invites Poirot to a séance. Mrs. Reynolds knows before he even speaks that Hercule is not a believer. She claims to be able to speak with the dead.

Cue the dimly lit scenery with mice crawling out of the walls outside. We then meet Rowena Drake who appears to be desperate to speak with her deceased child, a little girl. Mrs. Reynolds begins the séance.  Lights break, attendees gasp, and a chandelier crashes to the floor. Scenes flash as Mrs. Reynolds powerfully becomes the embodiment of Rowena’s daughter. From Mrs. Reynold’s perspective, the room begins to spin. People run about when suddenly a body of water comes into focus with what appears to be a person falling to the depths. Ariadne screams in terror. The area becomes a locked-down crime scene. Hercule will not allow anyone to leave until the murderer is found out.

Mrs. Reynolds and other attendees believe that the murderer is a ghost. Hercule and Ariadne disagree at this point. The scene cuts to Hercule alone, inspecting a leaking faucet in the bathroom when forces appearing to be supernatural push his head into the sink, now full of water, to drown him. He pushes with robustness to free himself. Briefly, in the mirror, he sees a reflection of a girl behind him. She quickly disappears. At this point, Hercule must suspect everyone in the house, even his old friend.

Find out for yourself if “the dead are killing the living” in theaters just in time for the spooky season – September 15, 2023. In the meantime, check out this brand-new trailer!
