Despite what you might see from Star Wars YouTubers, Kathleen Kennedy is indeed still in control of Lucasfilm, and she’s rather privy to what does and doesn’t work in this new era of the beloved franchise.

If you have your finger on the pulse of the Star Wars franchise, it’s common knowledge that the majority of fans highly regard Dave Filoni. Kennedy knows this, as she saw fit to promote him recently to Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm. Filoni talks about that and the state of the Star Wars Universe in a recent feature in Vanity Fair.

“I’m not telling people what to do….But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost,” Filoni told VF. “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.” He views his new role as helping the directors and producers flesh out the stories going forward, being involved from the beginning of the projects, and using him as a resource considering his extensive knowledge and his tutelage under the Father of Star Wars himself, George Lucas.

This new role could be a means of addressing one area of concern among some fans going forward: the perceived lack of prior planning to link Star Wars projects like the MCU. This allows him to flesh out the lore of a franchise that was previously mostly handled in the pages of books and graphic novels. For example, Filoni explains that he took a little, easily overlooked image of the galaxy in The Clone Wars TV series and ran with that to explain where Grand Admiral Thrawn had been and why no one had seen him.

With this new role, Filoni will have even more work on his hands, but he is still set to helm his culminating movie that is supposed to bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
