Darth Vader And Obi-Wan Could Face Off Again In Kenobi Series, Possibly Breaking 'Star Wars' Record, Report Says

Arguably, the most iconic moment in the original Star Wars film was the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. It was the first time that we got to actually see a lightsaber in action beyond a brief flash in the Mos Eisely cantina. The dialogue between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan was dripping with an untold history between the two, and Obi-Wan's ultimate sacrifice came as a huge shock for viewers. Decades later, Revenge of the Sith would come out, showing a fast-paced duel between the same two characters, with Obi-Wan having no choice but to leave Anakin, now Darth Vader, burning to death on a molten slope in the volcanic planet Mustafar. The Revenge of the Sith fight is definitely flashier, and the fight from A New Hope had more depth to it. They remain the best fights in the series. But now it appears that we're getting a part three to their duels, or a part two, rather, from a certain point of view.

The highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries on Disney+ had already confirmed that Darth Vader will make an appearance. How extensive that will be is up for debate, but since he will be there, there are theories that he and Obi-Wan will once again cross lightsabers. The fight could be interesting, as Obi-Wan isn't a slow, old man who had no chance against Vader. Age would slow him down later. In a possible fight in the miniseries, Obi-Wan would still be a master fighter, especially if he continues to use his lightsaber fighting style, Form III, or Soresu, a fighting style that he was the master of.

A fight between the two characters would set a record in Star Wars lore. This would be the first live-action lightsaber match to span three generations of Star Wars property. They would have fought in the original film, the third prequel, and now in the miniseries. There have been characters with three fights between them, most notably Rey Skywalker (Palpatine?) and Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy, but their fights were limited to just two films. With the next Vader and Kenobi fight, we'd get to see a more defined evolution with the fighting styles. In the first fight, they're both in their prime, with Anakin becoming the most powerful Force user there ever was, and Obi-Wan utilizing the defensive lightsaber form which he was the best ever at. In the final fight, Obi-Wan is older, and Vader is weaker than before because of his suit, but he's still arguably the best swordsman in the galaxy. With a third fight, we're between the two. Obi-Wan is still older, and Anakin likely hasn't grown as accustomed to his suit as we see in the first film.

Now, obviously Obi-Wan would win the fight, likely by getting away somehow. It's a foregone conclusion that neither character is going to die, and Obi-Wan isn't going to get seriously injured. Darth Vader could sustain serious damage, but he has the benefit of being able to rebuild his suit. There were several times it took a lot of damage in the Legends media.

However, all that aside, having the two of them cross blades one more time would be a bit of a... misstep. It would take a bit away from the power of the original fight in A New Hope. If they don't cross paths between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, then that gives the Death Star battle more weight. Just think about the last things they said to each other.

"You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you."

"I hate you!"

Then nineteen years later, they see each other again on the Death Star.

"I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan..."
