Danny Boyle Is Set To Direct A Dance Adaptation Of 'The Matrix' Titled 'Free Your Mind'
The Matrix isn’t the first film that comes to mind for a stage adaptation, but Danny Boyle has decided to take up the challenge in a multi-million-pound industrial theatre space in Manchester, UK. Don’t expect this to be on a small scale, Danny Boyle’s last attempt at theatre was the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. The show, titled Free Your Mind, is said to have ‘spectacular visual effects, a cast of professional dancers and hundreds of Manchester participants’. But even his movies, like Slumdog Millionaire and the cult favorite A Life Less Ordinary, have included complicated choreography. Boyle is well practiced at blurring the lines between cinema and dance.
It’s unclear whether the show will feature scenes from all three Matrix films or focus on the first offering, but we are likely to see versions of all the main characters such as Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus. Fans of the original are reacting with bemusement and confusion, and it’s easy to see why, as amazing as the show, its artistic highbrow take on the film may not be playing to those who paid to see Keanu Reeves bend spoons back in 1999.
But movie adaptations tend to be instant hits, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, Spamalot, Hairspray, The Producers, Billy Elliot, The Lion King, and the list goes on. It’s we’ll have to wait and see if Free Your Mind joins this prestigious line-up. There’s no word on when tickets will be released for the show but it’s not due to open until October 2023 so there’s plenty of time to get to The Rainy City.
