Babylon has arrived on the streaming service Paramount+ in the US. Directed by Damien Chazelle and released to theatres in late December 2022, the film has picked up many nominations at numerous awards shows in that time.

Inspired by real-life Hollywood players from the 1920s, Babylon shows how they react to the changing world around them as Hollywood transitions from silent to sound films. Starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li, each of the main characters adapt how they know best to stay relevant in the changing film industry.

Released at a time when Avatar: The Way of Water was attracting huge attention worldwide, Babylon failed to break even at the box office. With a $3.6 million 3-day opening at the US box office, the final worldwide total closed at $56.3 million. Reviews for the film were mixed, with a 56% aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 52%. The critical consensus says, “Babylon’s overwhelming muchness is exhausting, but much like the industry it honours, its well-acted, well-crafted glitz and glamour can often be an effective distraction.”

With its addition to Paramount+, perhaps more people will find enjoyment in this three-hour early Hollywood epic. Babylon is available on Paramount+ now in the US and Canada, with it appearing later this year worldwide.
