Daisy Ridley Gives Unexpected Health Update, "I Didn’t Realize How Bad I Felt Before"
Daisy Ridley, most famous for her role as Rey in the new Star Wars trilogy, opened up about her Graves disease. In an interview with Women’s Health, Ridley, age 32, revealed her 2023 diagnosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, Graves causes hypothyroidism or makes too much thyroid hormone. Weight loss, hand tremors, fatigue, and a racing heart are all symptoms of the autoimmune disease. Graves tends to affect women and people over 30 years old but anyone can develop the disease. Initially, Ridley thought her illness was the result of her performance in Magpie, where she played a stay-at-home mom on the brink. She explained, “I thought, 'Well, I’ve just played a really stressful role; presumably that’s why I feel poorly.'"
Ridley’s doctor described the disease as “tired but wired” which brought clarity to her condition. Ridley expressed, “It was funny, I was like, ‘Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,’ but turns out everything is functioning so quickly, you can’t chill out.’” In light of the diagnosis, Ridley decided to make some lifestyle changes including cutting back on gluten, increasing exercise and wellness practices such as cryotherapy and acupuncture, and being more conscious of her body and the signals it sends.

Ridley stressed the importance of listening to the body and being honest about it. She said, “We all read the stats about women being undiagnosed or under-diagnosed and sort of coming to terms with saying, ‘I really, actually don’t feel good’ and not going, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.' It’s just normalized to not feel good." While Ridley admitted that her disease is less severe than what many others go through, she emphasized that people shouldn’t just have to suffer through their problems, encouraging people to listen to their bodies.
