Could An 'Heir To The Empire' Feature Film Be Headed To Disney+?

The 2022 slate of Star Wars media is moving on, with the end of The Book of Boba Fett and the beginning of Obi-Wan Kenobi just two months away. According to rumors, we don’t know what will happen next, but we might have an idea of an endpoint. Of course, we’re not entirely sure if it’s real or not, so take everything we say as a mere possibility; you can’t get your hopes up over a false rumor. With that being said, we should also go over the hows and possible whys to cover all the bases. We don’t want to ignore any possible leak, but we should always take it with a grain of salt.

There is a rumor that Disney+ is adapting Heir to The Empire. This could refer to the original 1991 novel or the entire Thrawn trilogy. This was an important novel in the Legends continuity, not only because it kickstarted the return of Star Wars, but it introduced one of the most essential characters in the saga. One who would make the jump to the new Expanded Universe and continue to fascinate readers for decades. We are, of course, talking about Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has already been rumored to appear in Ahsoka later this year. But what does this mean for this rumored movie?

As we said before, it’s much too early to say that this is definitely happening, but if it is, we can infer that it is a crossover of all the Disney+ series during that period. This means The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett. No Obi-Wan Kenobi, unless we can somehow squeeze in a force ghost. This can be compared to Netflix’s The Defenders, which united the Marvel characters from the Netflix shows for one season before they all went their separate ways for their next seasons. It had mixed results, but it worked.

What would be the plot of this, if it is true? Simple, Grand Admiral Thrawn is gathering imperial holdouts and remnants to strike back at the New Republic, no pun intended. The many heroes we see throughout the Disney+ shows and a few bounty hunters will likely have to stop him. Ahsoka (and Sabine Wren by default) could take center stage as they’re setting up the search for Thrawn and Ezra Bridger to be a significant star arc for her show. We can also expect an appearance from the “original trio” of Luke, Han, and Leia. Luke, at least, already had an appearance in two shows, so he has to make an appearance if this is real.

Other than that, it’s hard to tell what would happen if this is real. We know Thrawn can’t win; the First Order would have no reason to exist if he did. But how would he fall? That’s a question we might never have an answer to, but we can speculate. So, for now, all we can do is watch the skies and wait for something to happen to see if this is real or not. Until then, take every leak of this with a grain of salt; it could save you a lot of disappointment in the long run.

Star Wars fans certainly aren’t being starved for content. Obi-Wan Kenobi, in particular, is due out in two months. You can read up some more on that one on Culture Slate; click the link below if you want to see some new pictures. Other than that, that’s all we have time for right now. So let’s make the jump to lightspeed, and head off once again into the great unknown.
