Cartoon Network is about to get a blast from the past as Adult Swim announced a new programming block dedicated to classic anime from the early days of Toonami.

This new programming block, named “Toonami Rewind” will air on Fridays at 5 pm starting this week, with the current lineup consisting of Sailor Moon (the Viz Media dub), Dragon Ball Z Kai (a condensed version of Dragon Ball Z), and Naruto. Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco also revealed that the original music and packaging from Toonami’s original run were remastered for HD broadcasting and will be included in the new programming block.

Cartoon Network’s Toonami block initially made its debut in 1997, and became a gateway for many anime fans of the time, airing series such as Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and many more, before coming to an end in 2008. The block would be revived in 2012 under Adult Swim, and continues to air licensed anime such as My Hero Academia, One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Naruto: Shippuden every Saturday night, along with original productions such as Ninja Kamui and My Adventures with Superman.

Toonami Rewind comes as the Adult Swim block continues to air earlier as trends show that fewer kids are watching Cartoon Network on TV compared to teens and adults, resulting in Adult Swim’s start time changing from 8 pm to 7 pm, and then to 6 pm as of last year.

Toonami Rewind begins this Friday at 5 pm with Sailor Moon. The full lineup is as follows.

  • 5:00 pm - Sailor Moon

  • 5:30 pm - Dragon Ball Z Kai

  • 6:00 pm - Dragon Ball Z Kai

  • 6:30 pm - Naruto
