CinemaCon Revealed Austin Butler’s Role In 'Dune: Part Two'

Austin Butler is certainly a rising star, coming from minor roles in television like Switched at Birth and Arrow, to major Hollywood movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His performance in Elvis even earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Now it looks like he will be joining the star-studded cast of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two.

On Tuesday, the Dune panel at CinemaCon revealed that Austin Butler has been cast as Feyd-Rautha (played by Sting in the 1984 version of Dune), the heir apparent of Baron Vladimir Harkonen and the counterpart to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. Villeneuve described the character as an “Olympic sword master, mixed with a psychotic serial killer.”

For those familiar with the story of Dune, after his near genocide of House Atreides, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) leaves management of Arrakis to his nephew Rabban (Dave Bautista). Rabban is a brute and ruthless compared to Feyd-Rautha’s calm, cool, yet calculating charm. When the Baron realizes that Paul is still alive, he places his hopes on his cunning nephew to remove the last Atreides obstacle to his dominion. Feyd-Rautha is known as a prolific fighter who relies on underhanded methods like poison to paralyze his opponents before he delivers the final blow. Author Frank Herbert compared him as the photo negative to the protagonist Paul.
