Carrie Fisher Remembered Fondly By Mark Hamill Ahead Of Her Walk Of Fame Ceremony
The day has finally come. Carrie Fisher received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, May 4th, 2023. Getting her long-overdue star on Star Wars Day is so incredibly perfect, that no other day would have been sufficient. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, and Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill were on hand to accept the star on her behalf.
Hamill sat down a few days ago with Variety to reflect on Fisher and the impact she had on not just the world, but on him as well. When he met Fisher shortly before filming began for A New Hope, Mark said of Carrie: “I was completely unprepared for the person I met, who just was overwhelming, in the sense that she seemed so much wiser than her years… very funny, very spontaneous, very witty.”

He also brought up her candidness about her personal life, including telling him details about her parents, Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, with the latter’s affair with Elizabeth Taylor creating a tabloid storm for years to come. “She was talking about her father’s addiction to painkillers … Things I would never offer up, even the people I’ve known for a long time.”
When it came to the sudden newfound fame that he, Fisher, and co-star Harrison Ford experienced after the release of the first movie, Hamil said that Carrie was the one to recognize that “the good far outweighs the bad. She embraced it in a way that was far beyond me. She loved going to the conventions, meeting the fans. She just reveled in it.”
Fisher went on to write several novels and memoirs, including Postcards from the Edge, which was turned into a movie starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. She was also well-known throughout Hollywood as a script doctor, putting her touches on Scream 3, Hook, and Sister Act.
Fisher passed away on December 23, 2016. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was dedicated to her memory.
