X-Men ‘97 has taken the world by storm over the last few weeks, airing on Wednesdays through May 15 on Disney+. The new era for the mutants continues the story where the X-Men animated series left off when it ended in 1997. The original series became somewhat of a cult classic, circulating for years in a rerun slot during Saturday morning cartoons while retaining a significant fanbase.

The new X-Men ‘97 embraces the same characters (even with several returning actors, albeit some voicing different parts), the same theme song, and parallels to the opening sequence and animation. Expectations have been high and for the most part, the new series follows through, already confirmed for at least three seasons

Spoilers below for X-Men ‘97 season 1, episode 4, released on April 3, 2024.

The newest X-Men ‘97 episode features two plots, one centering around Jubilee’s 18th birthday and the other continuing Storm’s storyline from the previous episode. Jubilee and Roberto get trapped in an alternate reality by the villain, Mojo. Through his Motendo console, Mojo traps them in different video games, forcing them to escape from several life-or-death situations one after the other. One line in particular, though, leads audiences to believe Mojo may be back, either further along in X-Men ‘97 or another Marvel storyline: “You brats may have canceled me today, but I swear, I’ll gut you in the reboot.”

When might audiences see Mojo back, if his comment is to be taken literally? Marvel was already looking to recast Kang (previously Jonathan Majors) for 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which has not yet started filming. However, with the current state of the Avengers and the ways of the Multiverse, it may be more suitable to replace the villain altogether for one with a history of manipulating alternate realities or the Multiverse.

Some possibilities for this Avengers villain include not only Mojo but also Dormammu, last seen in Doctor Strange, or even The Beyonders. Living outside of the Multiverse, The Beyonders were mentioned several times in Marvel comics, including in the Secret Wars, and have connections to the Fantastic Four, Loki, and Doctor Strange. If a new villain besides Kang doesn’t have a role in the next Avengers movie, there is a chance they may appear in the 2025 Fantastic Four or even Avengers: Secret Wars, currently slated for 2027.
