Brendan Fraser had his triumphant return to Hollywood by taking home the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in The Whale. Portraying Charlie, a 600-pound gay man in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller, Fraser wore over 300 pounds of prosthetics and even worked with a dance instructor to learn how to walk with so much weight. He won numerous accolades at multiple film festivals, and the film itself garnered a 6-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival.

After starring in a few moderate hits, including several Pauly Shore films, Fraser rose to the top of the box office with George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy. In the years following, Fraser starred in numerous flops, including Furry Vengeance and Hair Brained, marring his box-office darling status.

For nearly five years, Fraser stepped away from Hollywood due to surgeries caused by on-set injuries and an alleged sexual assault against him by former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Phillip Berk. He slowly began to make his return to film and screen with roles in Texas Rising and DC’s Doom Patrol. His move from commercial films to more artistic features began with No Sudden Moves and The Whale.

As Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry called his name as the winner, the auditorium erupted into applause and cheers, and Fraser embraced his girlfriend and two of his sons who were sitting behind him. His acceptance speech was filled with nautical puns, presumably based on the name of the film for which he won the Oscar. He thanked numerous people, including his costars, his manager and agent, and his family.

As for what’s next, Fraser will continue his role as Cliff Steele/Robotman in Doom Patrol, and will join Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon.
