Star Wars fans have been waiting a long time to see the return of Ewan McGregor in the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since Disney Investors Day in December, we have known that Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Now, we have a fuller list of cast members thanks to an announcement from StarWars.com.

Fans may notice a couple other names that have been featured in Star Wars before. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse have portrayed the younger versions of Owen and Beru Lars in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Their inclusion has felt like a certainty to many given that Kenobi is in exile on Tatooine, but it is nice to get a confirmation regardless. The four familiar characters are the obvious ones to include, but we now have a clearer picture of a diverse cast including Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

According to the announcement, Obi-Wan Kenobi will start filming in April. Ewan McGregor had previously stated that production would begin in late spring, so either production is starting sooner than expected or it could possibly be late April. In any case, the start of production is not too far away, and it will all be under the direction of Deborah Chow, who has directed a couple of the best received episodes of The Mandalorian season 1. Obi-Wan Kenobi is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2022.
