Star Trek films have had a long journey. From 1979 to 1991, fans got to see six films with the cast of The Original Series, and then four films featuring The Next Generation cast from 1994 to 2002. After that, there was a long gap of seven years before fans got another Star Trek film, this time set in what is known as the Kelvin timeline. That film got two more sequels, and now it looks like we are in the middle of yet another seven-year gap, though it is reassuring to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Per Deadline, we have learned that Paramount has set a release date for a currently untitled Star Trek film: June 9, 2023.

The official website for Star Trek acknowledges this:

“This will be the first new Star Trek film since the last installment in the Kelvin-verse series, Star Trek Beyond, director Justin Lin's 2016 installment. As of now, there is no official information concerning the director of this latest movie, nor do we know whether or not we'll be exploring more of the Kelvin-verse, perhaps pick up from where Star Trek: Nemesis left off with The Next Generation films, or if the film will follow a new plot entirely through the Prime timeline.”

So, for the time being, it is unknown whether the film is set in the Kelvin Timeline or the Prime Timeline. Since 2017, there as been a Prime Timeline renaissance in the small screen consisting of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks thus far, with Star Trek: Prodigy set to premiere on Nickelodeon sometime this year and other projects such as a Section 31 series set to come out at some point. The Kelvin Timeline has only had three films and no TV shows, so that timeline is very ripe for further exploration. But of course, it is also possible that the next film could be set in the Prime Timeline. Or perhaps even one of the other universes within the Star Trek multiverse. There are many possibilities to speculate about, but hopefully it will not be too long of a wait for official details about the film’s premise.
