'Breaking Bad' And 'Better Call Saul' Actor Mark Margolis Has Passed Away At The Age Of 83

Mark Margolis, an actor with over 100 television and film credits, passed away on August 3, 2023, in a New York City hospital. The actor was fighting a short, unspecified illness. His son, actor and entertainment company CEO Morgan Margolis confirmed this with CNN.  He was 83.

Margolis was born on November 26, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before moving to New York City, the actor briefly attended Temple University. Following this, he studied under Stella Adler, and later under Lee Strasberg and Barbara Loden. His career kicked off in theatre and Broadway following his training. Margolis’ first screen acting credit is from The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976).

Margolis was best known as Don Hector “Tío” Salamanca in Breaking Bad, and a younger version of the Cartel don in the prequel series Better Call Saul. It was this role that got him a 2012 Emmy nomination. He tended to perform villain-esque roles, including Shadow in Scarface (1983) and Fallon in Daredevil (2003). The actor also had a noteworthy relationship with director Darren Aronofsky, collaborating on films such as Black Swan (2010), Pi (1998), and The Fountain (2006). Overall, Margolis had an extensive career and impact in television and film, and that impact will linger for years to come.
