Boba Fett Takes On The Galaxy's Worst in 'War Of The Bounty Hunters'

Everyone’s favorite bounty hunter is back in a new comic series this May. The original Mandalorian bounty hunter (though perhaps not technically a Mandalorian), Boba Fett has made an explosive comeback in the last year, and it is every bit as awesome as we wanted it to be. First seen destroying stormtroopers in The Mandalorian season 2 and aiding in the rescue of baby-uh-Grogu, and now it is known that he will have an entire series coming to Disney+ at the end of the year. Needless to say, we have a lot of fun stories to come from our favorite Han Solo hunter, but we now know we will be getting even more Fett action. This time, however, it will be in the form of a massive comic crossover coming later this year, and it will be set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

StarWars.com recently released an interview with writer Charles Soule and announced that he will be writing a Boba Fett story called War of the Bounty Hunters. The initial pitch for this story started back in 2019, and it was actually part of a larger story. However, Soule now has the opportunity to really hone in on the bounty hunter and his story while also expanding the Star Wars universe. Per Soule in the interview:

“Boba Fett clearly doesn’t take Han Solo directly to Jabba’s palace. Something had to happen in between that intervening time between Empire and Jedi. And I was like, ‘I would like to tell that story, and I would like it to be about Boba Fett and what happens to him.’”

Soule is now getting to tackle that story as revealed in some teaser images released and the official announcement on startwars.com. This will also be an epic crossover in traditional Marvel fashion, so we can expect to see a lot of characters crossing the bounty hunter’s path.

According to the same website, the series will run from May through October with the first issue, War of the Bounty Hunters #1 coming on May 5th. From there, the series will further launch into Marvel’s post-Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back line. This includes the titles Star WarsBounty Hunters, Darth Vader, and Doctor Aphra. The series will also be drawn by Steve McNiven. Soule says, “I think it’s the best work he’s maybe ever done,” and you can get a taste of it in some of the teaser images released.

Naturally, Soule couldn’t reveal much about the story of the series, but he did give a bit of information about what kind of story it is and what Fett will be experiencing during the run.

“The main story that we’re dealing with is a Boba Fett-focused crime epic, that involves Boba Fett going up against some of the heaviest hitters in the galaxy. It’s Jabba the Hutt. It’s Black Sun. It’s Darth Vader."

It should come as no surprise that the reasoning behind Boba Fett taking on the galaxy’s worst is none other than Han Solo. Soule was careful to explain how the conflict comes to be.

“Boba Fett is in possession of Han Solo at the end of Empire Strikes Back, and at the beginning of War of the Bounty Hunters, he is not. And he is going to do everything he can to get him back, no matter what. No matter who is standing in the way.”

Soule also wanted to make a point to include his collaborators. Although the initial inspiration for the story came from Soule, he says it was truly a collaboration with several of the other Star Wars creators.

“My co-writers on this story, and all the great artists that we’re working with, it’s a fantastic team. This might’ve come from my brain to a degree, but we’re all adding really interesting things to it. Everybody’s getting to tell their own story within this over-arching plot of Boba Fett trying to get what’s his.”

Between his appearance in The Mandalorian, his upcoming series, and this new comic story, there is going to be a lot more of the bounty hunter to go around, and I am beyond excited. Especially since this crossover seems to be one of the biggest we have ever seen thus far in the Star Wars universe. Boba Fett is back and better than ever.
