The Wrap has recently learned that Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto is on board to direct an adaptation of the superhero property Blue Beetle, from DC Films and Warner Bros.  The project will be the first superhero movie starring a Latino character, and it’s very exciting.

The screenplay will be written by Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s upcoming Scarface remake and Sony’s Miss Bala.

Blue Beetle is the superhero alter ego used by three different heroes in the DC Comics material. The film will focus on a Mexican-American teenager named Jaime Reyes, the third character to assume the mantle of Blue Beetle. In a statement for The Wrap, Soto said:

“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”

In DC Comics, Jaime Reyes comes from a working class family in El Paso. He is a teenager with no connections. Reyes’ origin starts with finding the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school, and at night, the scarab comes to life, grafting itself to Reyes’ spine, and giving him a suit of armor that provides enhanced speed and strength as well as other abilities like weapons and shields.

Production of Blue Beetle is set to start in fall of 2021.
