Billy Dee Williams Discusses Unresolved 'Rise Of Skywalker' Plotline

Among the more or less subtle hints in The Rise of Skywalker that were never followed up is that Lando Calrissian could have a daughter. At the end of the movie, the notorious smuggler and general of the Rebel Alliance sat with Jannah (played by Naomi Ackie), talking about her origin. When Jannah explained that she didn’t know where she came from, Lando offered to help her find out.

The film apparently included a scene in which Lando talked about his daughter, who had been kidnapped by the First Order when she was just two years old and turned into a Stormtrooper. Although this scene didn’t end up in the finished film, Pablo Hidalgo’s reference book The Rise of Skywalker- The Visual Dictionary gave a little more background on the girl, pinpointing her birth at 13 ABY and her abduction at 15 ABY. As Jannah would be the right age and she and her group had all been involuntary stormtroopers who defected after being ordered to kill a bunch of Innocents, it would be plausible that she indeed is the offspring of Calrissian.

In the Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Billy Dee Willians, who has played Lando in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and reprised this role in Episode IX, now picked up on this lose thread:

“They were trying to decide whether I should have a daughter. I don’t know if they decided to follow up on that idea. I haven’t heard any feedback or anything on where – or what direction they want to take with that.”

So far, the only other media mentioning Lando’s daughter and picking up on the information from Hidalgo’s book is the 2022 cannon novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher. In the book, the girl's name is Kadara, while her mother is mentioned but never identified by name. After her abduction, Lando searched the galaxy for years in vain before settling on the planet Passana, hoping to one day gather additional information to continue his quest.

Currently, it's unclear if Lucasfilm ever plans to confirm that Kadara and Jannah are indeed the same person or to include Kadara in an upcoming project. Still, it's possible that Lando’s daughter could appear in the upcoming Lando project. Initially announced as a TV series for Disney+, it now seems that Donald Glover and his brother Steven are writing the script for a Lando movie. But if Glover reprises his role from Solo, the movie will likely take place before the events of A New Hope rather than years after Return of the Jedi, so the timeline probably won’t fit.

But Lando’s daughter could appear in the upcoming Rey movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Star Wars has proven time and time again that Force always finds ways to bring people together.
