On May the Fourth, or rather Star Wars Day, Mark Hamill and Billie Lourd paid tribute to the late actress Carrie Fisher during the unveiling of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Speaking during the ceremony, Lourd shared words of what her mother playing the role of Princess Leia meant to generations of fans. “I realised that Leia is more than just a character. She’s a feeling. She is strength. She is wit. She is femininity at its finest. She knows what she wants, and she gets it. She doesn’t need anyone to rescue her because she rescues herself – and even rescues the rescuers. And no-one could’ve played her like my mother.”

During the speech, Lourd talked of other aspects of Fisher’s career, such as her writing of books and screenplays, but mostly focused on the influential character that had been Princess Leia Organa. Lourd shared that as a kid, she hadn’t taken notice of Star Wars, and rolled her eyes whenever her mother tried to get her to watch one. It wasn’t until her peers in middle school talked about how much they loved her in the role that she gave them a chance. And became a diehard fan from then on.

It was Hamill who opened the ceremony with memories of the early days of Star Wars, with his first meeting that obliterated every expectation he had of the 19-year-old Fisher. He then shared some words that he had written upon learning of her death in 2016. “Carrie was one of a kind, who belonged to us all whether we liked it or not,” he recited. “She was our princess, damn it, and the actress who played her blurred into one gorgeous, fiercely independent, and ferociously funny, take-charge woman who took our collective breath away.”

To conclude the event, the two unveiled Fisher’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Lourd saying one last thing. “My mom was glitter. She covered her world in it both literally and metaphorically. She left a mark of her sparkle on everyone she met.”
