Bethesda Delays ‘Starfield’ And ‘Redfall’ Until 2023
On Thursday morning, Bethesda Games took to Twitter to announce some devastating news for fans of the studio: both Starfield and Redfall have been delayed to 2023. Some people will assure you they saw this coming, especially since the developer has yet to release any gameplay footage of Starfield. This also comes on the heels of several insiders at Bethesda saying last year at E3 that Starfield was going to be the “next Cyberpunk” if they committed to the November release date, which was intended to mirror the initial release date of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (11/11/2011).
However, fans of the highly anticipated game need not fret for long. Bethesda has said that both Redfall and Starfield will come out in the first half of 2023. For better or worse, this means that the Xbox lineup for this year will be slim for exclusive releases on the console. The delay could be a very good move for Bethesda in the long run. By allowing the team extra time to perfect the product the assumption would be that both games will be very polished at release.

At the time of writing this article, the only things Bethesda has released for Starfield seem to be a mix of dev diaries, behind-the-scenes content, teaser trailers, and promotional images. We have yet to see any actual gameplay footage for it. Since it was announced in 2018, Starfield has been the talk of the town. This only increased with the announcement that the game would be an Xbox exclusive after Microsoft acquired Bethesda last year. Hopefully, the game is very close to release and this time is spent polishing the game and refining mechanics. Starfield will also be the debut of Creation Engine 2, a revamped version of the engine powering every recent Bethesda title from Oblivion to Fallout 76. For Bethesda, a lot is riding on this release to not be “the next Cyberpunk".
All this talk about Starfield means that we have left Redfall on the back-burner. Redfall had a surprise announcement last year from Arkane Studios, who gave us the Dishonored series, as well as Prey. This title promises an open-world first-person shooter experience with co-op aspects. In this title, a choice of four main characters with unique special abilities combined with an immersive story set in fictional Redfall, Massachusetts will have players hunting both humans and vampires alike.
While Starfield may overshadow Redfall in many regards, Xbox fans should keep an eye out for both titles. Although 2022 seems to be a year of silence for Xbox-exclusive announcements, 2023 will be very exciting if Bethesda can deliver on these promises. We can still look forward to more information about these releases at the upcoming Xbox Game Showcase on June 12th as Bethesda will have a presentation for their upcoming projects. Maybe we will see some new gameplay footage of either game. Until then, only time will tell.
