Back To The Grid: 40 Years Of TRON At D23

On August 4th, a tweet from D23 (the official Disney Fan Club) announced a TRON presentation at the annual D23 conference, which will be held in early September.

The panel, entitled “Back to the Grid: 40 Years of TRON presented by Enterprise,” is a retrospect celebrating the film’s 40th anniversary. From the description:

“Lightcycles, recognizers, and solar sails, oh my! Join us for a look back at Tron, featuring artwork, footage, and photographs from the digital frontier. Hear behind-the-scenes stories of how the film came to life with talent, artists, and filmmakers—and dive into the continuous impact of this groundbreaking film.”

Released on July 9th, 1982, the original TRON was the first to feature the combination of 3D CGI and live action. In addition, the light cycle scene was the first extensive use of fully computer-generated animation in a movie. TRON tells the story of Flynn, an incredible video game maker who, after hacking into his ex-employer’s mainframe, is beamed into the very game he is designing.

TRON inspired two sequels, TRON: Legacy, which follows Flynn’s son Sam going back into the Grid, and TRON: Uprising, an animated series that takes place between the original film and Legacy.

A D23-Exclusive Pin was released on July 11th (and quickly sold out). The pin, inspired by the original movie, glows in the dark and features Flynn’s blue light cycle.
