Apple, ever the tech giant and opportunistic company, has officially announced its version of a mixed reality headset. The device is labeled “revolutionary” according to the company, ushering in an era of “spatial computing” for its consumers. From specialized chips to “more pixels than a 4K TV for each eye,” this headset will pack a punch. It was announced during the annual WWDC keynote event.

The Vision Pro will have both augmented reality and virtual reality modes to switch between.  This device's Operating System (OS) will be unique to the tech. Titled VisionOS, it was designed to present a compatible interface with the augmented reality format, meaning it “frees the app from the boundaries of a display." Multitasking is also designed to be easier in this format.

This headset will reportedly contain 12 cameras, six microphones, and five sensors. M1 and R2, the two chips inside, are designed to withstand the workload that this will create to present the best experience possible. There are also externally focused features; a feature called EyeSight will keep the user aware of the space around them while using these AR goggles.

While the external battery only lasts for up to two hours on the headset, it is meant to last the entire day when it is plugged in. The advanced displays within the headset will allow users to view Apple TV+ and Disney+, creating further opportunities for the battery life to be tested.

The surface has been scratched with what possibilities this headset presents. It will hit the market sometime next year, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet. The retail price is set at $3,499 and it will reportedly enter the U.S. market first.
