The audience of Andor may have yet to recognize Andy Serkis as a CGI-designed antagonist from the sequel trilogySupreme Leader Snoke. However, his return to Star Wars took a very different direction. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Serkis opened up about the rounded arc of his new character Kino Loy.

Kino Loy is an excellent example of a well-rounded character; he goes from a rigid manager of the floor’s 5-day shift at Narkina 5 to the core voice of inspiration for the breakout. One line towards the end of episode 10 changes the entire perspective on the character. Loy doesn’t know how to swim; he knew this going into the breakout plan and helped the others to freedom anyways.

In the interview with THR, Serkis said that he “wanted him to have been from a place of integrity prior to being in prison.”  The Empire “knocked it out of him,” but in episode 10, “he finds that desire to act on behalf of others again.”

The story of Kino Loy is summed up well by Serkis in the following statement regarding the “never more than twelve” line:

“It’s the arc of a man who’s become so desensitized and is only really looking after number one and just wants to get through his incarceration and his sentence. He just wanted to get through the day. And in that moment… the scales fall from his eyes, and he re-engages with his truth and finds himself again.”

The future of Kino Loy is questionable at best; he can’t swim, and he wasn’t pushed off the platform or killed, either on or off-screen. A return is possible; however, nothing has been confirmed thus far. Serkis has also remained vague on Loy’s future.
