'Andor' Has Now Added Two More Directors
Two new directors have joined the Rebellion! During Disney’s Investors Day, Lucasfilm revealed several new series coming to Disney+. One of the new Star Wars series coming to Disney+ that we've known about for a while will be Star Wars: Andor, a prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series will follow Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor through many adventures and many missions for the Rebellion.
The series sizzle reel was released during Disney’s Investor Day, showing us a deeper look into the show, and we also learned that the first season will have twelve episodes. The show will be released in the year 2022, with Tony Gilroy as the showrunner. Production began at the end of November 2020, shortly before the series title was officially announced. It is great to have Gilroy run this mysterious series as he was one of the co-writers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and handled the reshoots.
We have known for a while that Toby Haynes, who directed Black Mirror episode "USS Callister," is on the list of directors for the series. Recently, two new directors were confirmed for the growing list. One of the first new directors who was announced is Susanna White, who’s famous for directing several episodes of Boardwalk Empire. The second of these newly revealed directors is the great Ben Caron, who’s known for directing several episodes of Netflix’s award-winning series The Crown.
It is always exciting when a show has a different directors to shoot the different episodes, since every director adds their own personal touch and style to each episode. Each director will show off their different elements to tell the story of Cassian and the rest of the characters. One of the things that fans are excited to see in this show is the Rebellion in its prime, before the events of Rogue One.
Fans have also speculated that the series will show bits of Cassian’s backstory, like we saw for Din Djarin in the first season of The Mandalorian. Several fans, including myself, believe this series will show the darker side of the Rebellion, the horrible missions the Rebellion made its members do in order to achieve victory. In Rogue One, we Cassian explained to Jyn Erso how the Rebellion gave him some orders in the past, orders which made him second-guess his decision of joining the Rebellion itself. I strongly believe that this series will show us some of those horrifying missions that made the Rebellion seen as a group of extremists, just like Saw Gerrera’s forces in Rebels, and in Rogue One itself.
I for one cannot wait to see what the show’s direction will be. I hope the show gives us another side of the Rebellion, as neither the Empire nor the Rebellion are perfect; they both have flaws, and they both have done missions that many wish they had not. One of the fascinating things we got from Rogue One was the presentation of how the Rebellion was willing to hire a man’s own daughter to search for him, so that he may be killed, which is something that we all never expected the Rebellion do.
Whether this series takes us on the journey some of us fans have speculated, or a completely new direction, we can all be sure of one thing: when Andor is released in 2022, it will bring us all a whole new perspective of the Rebellion, and will probably show us more cruel and nefarious acts from our beloved Empire. I for one wish to see several characters like Hera Syndula, Kanan, and Governor Tarkin. Since the character of Mon Mothma has already been confirmed, it would also be nice to see Senator Bail Organa again, and maybe a young Princess Leia.
Who knows what surprises the Andor series has in store for us?
