Fans of Battlestar Galactica have long awaited an update on projects on the horizon for the hinge of humanity's survival amidst war with the Cylons. The last update the fandom received was about five years ago via Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. Esmail had stated at the time that a new version of the hit series was on his radar. However, traction waned.  Deadline reported recently that the project is happening, announcing that Derek Simonds has signed on to serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Other credits to Simonds include the 2017 USA series The Sinner and Call Me By Your Name. Esmail will remain an executive producer.

Sam Esmail commented in 2019 that Battlestar Galactica would be a “new story within the mythology” rather than a remaking of the beloved 2004 series or the 1978 original. This reboot of the franchise will be developed for Peacock. It certainly will have big shoes to fill as the 2004 edition enjoyed a four-season run and is hailed by many as one of the best sci-fi series from the early 2000s. Sam Esmail appears confident in the progress thus far, saying the project is “in great shape.” No other specifics have been released just yet.
