In celebration of Stan Lee’s 100th birthday, Marvel Studios will be releasing a documentary about the famed Marvel Comics writer. It will first appear at the Tribeca Film Festival before making its way to Disney+ on June 16.

Stan Lee, together with Jack Kirby, created many of the Marvel superheroes that Marvel is famed for. Even before the likes of the Fantastic Four, Hulk, and Spider-Man, Lee had already made a name for himself at the formerly-named Timely Comics by co-creating characters such as Jack Frost and Father Time. He injected his superheroes with human flaws, which proved popular within the comic world.

The Tribeca Film Festival this year will take place June 7-18 in New York City, with 109 feature films set to be shown across those dates. Of those 109 films, 53 will be documentaries, with the Stan Lee documentary directed by Tribeca alumnus David Gelb. From the Tribeca site, the documentary traces “his life from his upbringing in New York as Stanley Lieber to the rise of Marvel Comics,” telling the story of his “life, career, and legacy using his own words and personal archival material.”

Whether at the Tribeca Film Festival or with its release on Disney+, this does seem like a must-see for fans of the legendary writer. A writer whose characters will continue the legacy of his work.
