An Ezra and Thrawn Series *Might* Be In The Works For Disney+

March 5th marked the 3-year anniversary of the thrilling Star Wars Rebels series finale, the last time we've seen young Jedi Ezra Bridger and fan favorite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn onscreen. Carried off into the Unknown Regions by hyperspace-faring creatures, their fate was and continues to largely be a mystery. The finale, while entertaining and satisfying, left the audience with questions galore. Where have they gone? Did they have to put their differences aside to survive a strange uncharted planet? How did they survive the vacuum of space with the bridge of the Chimera breached? Many Star Wars fans expected these questions to be answered in the Ahsoka or Rangers of the New Republic shows coming to Disney+.

However, a new rumor, originating with the fine folk over at Kessel Run Transmissions, has begun talk that there might be another surprise show in the works at Disney+. In a recent episodes of the Kessel Run Radio podcast, host Cory Van Dyke hinted at the potential for another show that went unannounced at the investor day. The precedent for this has already been set with The Book of Boba Fett announcement being saved for the unexpected post-credit scene in The Mandalorian finale. Wherein Boba Fett returns to Jabba's Palace (or should we say Bib's Palace) to lay claim to Jabba's throne and hopefully the entire Hutt cartel. A Rebels sequel series has long been rumored to be in the works with most people expecting Dave Filoni to follow it up with another animated show. According to Cory, the story will continue sooner than we think. During the Kessel Run Radio podcast's signoff, Cory not-so subtly drops what could be a major hint about the development of an Ezra/Thrawn show, saying, "make sure that you guys subscribe to Disney+ for that Ezra and Thrawn series coming out very soon."

This comment may sound like a joke, and Cory, Noah, and Claire certainly like to have their fun on their show, but Kessel Run Transmissions also has an exceptional history of leaks and news. Often being in the know about the inner workings of Lucasfilm months ahead of the rest of us. If the story of Ezra and Thrawn post-purrgil were to receive its own show, it would certainly open up several other storylines for The Mandalorian spinoff shows. Ideally, this series would pick up immediately on the other end of the fateful hyperspace jump from Lothal at the end of Rebels, with a disabled Chimera drifting through space. While this show might not have enough content for repeated seasons, Disney has demonstrated a commitment to, and skill at executing, compelling limited series.

With the exceptional run of WandaVision, and with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Obi-Wan Kenobi on the horizon, it feels like the perfect time for a limited series. An Ezra and Thrawn series, forcing them to band together in order to survive, would make for an excellent 6 or 7-episode run and would serve to set up Ahsoka's hunt for Thrawn as seen in The Mandalorian. This could also be an opportunity for Star Wars to explore new and exciting aspects of the universe, with much of the Unknown Regions a mystery to all. While it would be interesting to see these two in the immediate aftermath of Rebels, there is still roughly a decade-long gap between the Battle of Lothal and the events of "Chapter 13: The Jedi" to be bridged. Adding a show centering around Ezra and Thrawn would certainly help to make connections with the animated shows and to widen the story telling into new and exciting territory.
