An 80s Time Travel Adventure 'Paper Girls' Will Debut On Amazon Prime July 29th
Stranger Things is the most recent show to pay homage to the 80s. It follows a group of kids, who have to deal with and fight monsters. In the past, these stories have been largely male-dominated. Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang looked to change this, with their comic series, Paper Girls. The popular comic series had a 30-issue run and has most recently been adapted into a series for Amazon Prime. The series will premiere in July, and the first look at the show was just released.
Paper Girls follow the stories of four girls, who meet up on Halloween morning in 1988 for their daily paper route. They find a time machine and are thrust into the present day where they meet their future selves. Not only do they have to meet their future selves, but they are also met with wartime travelers, and are tasked with saving the world. The idea came to Vaughan and Chiang after they saw the paper boys in their neighborhood replaced with paper girls. They built the foursome around other popular groups like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Beatles. Each member of the group has a distinct personality and archetype. Tiffany has a "video game addiction" and Erin is close to Chiang's heart. Chiang loves that he gets to tell an Asian-American coming of age story. Erin, with her nerdiness, is something he sympathizes deeply with from growing up. With all the diversity and distinct personalities of each character, you'll definitely be able to find yourself in one of them, if not all.
The creators wanted them to "meet their future selves" because it just felt "natural. Everyone has a picture of how they want to be in 10 years, so for these girls, who are barely teenagers, to see their adult selves is really cool. The girls are played by Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, and Fina Strazza as K.J. Brandman. Ali Wong also plays the adult version of Erin. Ali Wong is a fantastic choice for Erin because most people are familiar with her through comedy, so getting to see her play a more dramatic role will be a nice showcase of her abilities.
Vaughan and Chiang assisted the creators of the show. They provided them with detailed notes on the characters, and Chiang explained his designs and art. Both creators are excited to see their comic taken to the next level. If you've never heard of Paper Girls until now, the show will be just as accessible to those who have been fans of the comic. If you're a fan of the comic, the show will still be surprising. There are places the comic couldn't go, and new characters and threats.
As a long-time fan of the Paper Girls comic, I cannot wait to see the show. The first look of the show looks awesome. I am excited to see these wonderful characters on screen and have their stories fleshed out more. Paper Girls premieres on Amazon Prime on July 29th.
