On May 2, the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike against the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers, seeking higher residual payments and protection from AI technology. In July, the actor’s guild SAG-AFTRA joined the strike leaving the AMPTP without actors or writers. After three months of the WGA strike, the AMPTP’s president Carol Lombardini has finally reached out to the guild to resume negotiations.

At this first sign of hope for ending the strike, Michele Mulroney, Vice President of WGA West shared her thoughts, “When the guild’s ready to say anything, we’ll obviously officially come to our members and talk at the appropriate moment, but we’re hopeful that they’re starting to perhaps see sense in engaging with these two unions on strike and that without us, they don’t have any product and their pipeline is drying up. We hope that the pressure that we’ve been applying is going to bear fruit; we believe that it will and we believe we’re going to win.”

When asked about the news, the AMPTP said, “We remain committed to finding a path to mutually beneficial deals with both unions.” This move by the AMPTP signals that the unions may have the upper end. The unions would benefit from a solution that lets the actors and writers return to work under better conditions, so the studios can continue producing movies and television programs.
