Global giant Amazon faced a protest from its corporate workers earlier this month in front of its Seattle headquarters. Hundreds of workers staged the walkout over the company’s impact on the environment and the return-to-office mandate.

While Amazon is not the first company to order its employees back to work, the mandate was met with resistance, including a petition signed by over 20,000 workers. The petition included the benefits of working from home, but ultimately fell on deaf ears. The policy went into effect in May, and the protest, led by 2 workers, streamed the walkout live on Twitter.

The protest also comes on the heels of recent layoffs, where nearly 27,000 workers lost their jobs due to cutbacks across the company. With the demand from the pandemic decreasing, Amazon shuttered several of its programs, including AmazonGO stores and Amazon Smile. It also saw its first annual net loss since 2014. However, it has seen success with Amazon Prime Video, with shows like Rings of Power and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel being hits for the streaming platform.

In a memo back in February, Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, said that the decision to have staff return to the office at least 3 days a week was made after seeing what worked during the pandemic. Amazon workers also expressed their disapproval of Amazon’s environmental impact. The retail giant, according to staff, consistently fails to meet the short-term goals set by the company itself when it comes to reducing its carbon footprint.
