Alan Tudyk Says That K-2SO Will Not Be In Season 1 Of 'Andor'

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may be the most universally loved Star Wars film of the Disney era. One of the standout characters in it was K-2SO, an Imperial KX-series security droid who provided some comic relief. Reprogrammed to serve the Rebel Alliance, this droid was portrayed by Alan Tudyk opposite of Diego Luna's Cassian Andor. Back in 2019, we found out that Cassian Andor would be getting his own TV series acting as a prequel to Rogue One. More recently, on Disney Investors Day last month, the title was confirmed to simply be Andor. It has seen delays and is currently slated to hit Disney+ sometime in 2022.

While Cassian Andor is the titular character, there was an assumption that Tudyk would return as K-2SO right away, Alan Tudyk has recently revealed information. While talking to Collider about his new Syfy series Resident Alien, Tudyk provided an update about his involvement in Andor:

“They're shooting it right now, I'm not in it. But, if it stays on the air, stories keep getting told, I'll end up in there."

It seems that K-2SO will not appear in season 1 of Andor, but rather in a later season.

“I'm going to be in the show. It's just that the story that Tony [Gilroy] is telling doesn't involve K-2SO until later on... I can't be too specific, but I can definitely say that I'm not going to be in the first season.”

This came as a bit of a surprise. It felt a bit odd, given that both Alan Tudyk and Diego Luna were present when the series was being talked about at D23 in 2019. Tudyk acknowledged the event:

“I'm in all these announcements for the show, and I had suggested at D23 when we announced the show, that it be called 'K2 Fast K2 Furious: The Cassian Andor Series' and, um, that's not happening, it's called 'Andor!'”

When The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news about the series back in 2019, they mentioned that the series would begin five years before the events of Rogue One. If one wants to make a multi-season show, this makes sense. It would actually take place within the same timeframe as the animated series Star Wars Rebels. So there is plenty of time for rebel spy Cassian Andor to meet up with sarcastic droid K-2SO.

In fact, we have actually seen their meeting in a Cassian & K-2SO one-shot comic from 2017. The comic book story itself was not specific on when its events take place. This calls into question whether the events of the comic book may be adapted onscreen. Given that The Mandalorian went out of its way to adapt some of the Cobb Vanth story from the Aftermath novels (with some details omitted), it may be possible to see the two characters' meeting in pretty much the same manner. Or perhaps a season could begin with K-2SO already partnered with Cassian, and they could simply allude to the events very briefly, so as to avoid to much contradiction.

In any case, it is reassuring to know that K-2SO will be in the series eventually, even if we do not see him right away. It is better that we know this now so that we are not constantly expecting to see him in the show's first season. It seems that the show is doubling down on how this is Cassian Andor's show, but that does not mean that we will never see his hilarious partner sometime down the line.
