After Only Three Years, Google Decides To Pull The Plug On Stadia
News of the shutdown has not come as a surprise to fans of the gaming community. Since its founding in 2019, there has been much skepticism about the longevity of the streaming service as Google has few connections to the gaming industry. In addition, the service faced a dearth of new releases after Google shut down its game development studios last year.

Despite Google’s initial insistence that the streaming service was not heading to a shutdown, many in the gaming industry have seen the writing on the wall. Stadia’s collapse appeared imminent when it was not mentioned as a cloud gaming option for Logitech’s new gaming handheld announced last week.
Google has also announced that they will refund customers for all Stadia hardware purchased through the Google store, as well as for games and add-on features. Stadia Pro subscriptions will not be refunded, but customers will not be charged for the shutdown period and will continue to have access to games until the official shutdown in January.
Members of the Stadia team at Google will be redistributed to other departments at the company, and Stadia’s technology will be applied to other Google platforms, such as Youtube and Google Play. While it may be game over for Stadia, its technology may be rebooted in a future Google project.
