Today is a historic day in Hollywood as the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to a close in its 118th day of striking. The strike officially ended at 12:01 a.m. on November 9. After turbulent talks between the actors’ guild and the AMPTP over the past few weeks, the studios, pressured by the need to salvage the 2024 release schedule and their quarterly earning reports, decided to concede to many of the guild’s demands.

While the full details of the deal won’t be released until Friday, November 10, SAG-AFTRA said the deal increases minimum pay for members and residual payments for streaming shows along with higher pension and health caps and better compensation for background actors. The deal also includes what the guild described as “unprecedented provisions for consent and compensations that will protect members from the threat of AI.” SAG-AFTRA members will vote on the deal on November 10.

The AMPTP expressed its relief at the strike closing, “Today’s tentative agreement represents a new paradigm. It gives SAG-AFTRA the biggest contract-on-contract gains in the history of the union, including the largest increase in minimum wages in the last forty years; a brand new residual for streaming programs; extensive consent and compensation protections in the use of artificial intelligence; and sizable contract increases on items across the board. The AMPTP is pleased to have reached a tentative agreement and looks forward to the industry resuming the work of telling great stories.”

With the strike being over, SAG-AFTRA members can go back to working in movies and television and will be allowed to promote upcoming films and TV shows. The guild followed through with their strike action even under the threat of losing healthcare, and it looks like their resolve has paid off. Hollywood studios, screen actors, and others affected by the strikes can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
