Rumor: ‘The Mandalorian’ Will End After Season And Be Replaced With This New Show
Disney Lucasfilm's hit live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, concluded its stellar second season in December 2020. Its spin-off show, The Book of Boba Fett, will fill in the gap until the release of its third season some time in 2022. Originally started in 2019, The Mandalorian introduced fans to a faceless Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, who roams the Outer Rim collecting bounties approximately five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. The show's premiere episode takes him on a major detour as he is assigned to track down, and deliver an alien child to a mysterious client. He delivers this an apparent member of the late Jedi Master Yoda's species to the client. However, he becomes concerned about the motives of the client toward the child, and decides to flee with the child. By the end of the first season, his bounty hunting ways change as he is now tasked with the responsibility of returning this Force-sensitive child to the Jedi. The second season ends with him finally fulfilling this task, and leaving him open to new adventures. As theories and speculations arise about Book of Boba Fett and the third season of The Mandalorian, rumors have come out concerning changes the show might undergo in season 4 and beyond.
The second season finale sees Din Djarin besting Imperial Moff Gideon in combat, thus winning the right to hold the Darksaber, the ancient Mandalorian symbol of power. This act seemingly paves the way for Din to become ruler of Mandalore. Despite his wishes against it, this is the way of the Mandalorian, much to the apparent chagrin of Bo-Katan Kryze, Din’s ally in season two who has been fighting to restore the Mandalorian world. It appears that season 3 will go into the restoration of the planet Mandalore, which as been decimated by the Empire.

There are currently few, if any, details confirming what might happen in season 3 and beyond, or even how many seasons the show might ultimately run. Recent tweet by Jordan Maison of Cinelinx speaks of the show possibly undergoing a name change to better reflect the evolving nature of the show and Din’s character.
It is clear that the show will no longer center around Din’s relationship with the child Grogu. He may rise to the new role of leader of Mandalore, or he may help Bo-Katan restore her own leadership of the planet. After all, she has claimed the Darksaber in during the events of Star Wars Rebels only to lose it to Moff Gideon in the time prior to The Mandalorian. The rumors also suggest that the show itself may end with its characters and the era may continue on in an entirely new show.
The direction the show takes in season 3 and beyond may also depend on the shared MandoVerse being established by several upcoming spin-off series set during the time period, and how they all connect with each other. The end of second season of The Mandalorian shows Boba Fett and Fennec Shand returning to Jabba’s former palace, and killing his former majordomo Bib Fortuna. The Book of Boba Fett will likely follow Boba Fett as he seeks to take control of Jabba’s former criminal organization on Tatooine. The second season also sees Din finding the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano. Although she ultimately refuses to train Grogu and Din continues on his search for the Jedi, we discover that Ahsoka is on her own quest to find Grand Admiral Thrawn. This will be the likely plot for the upcoming Ahsoka series. Rangers of the New Republic was supposed to feature former Rebel Shock Trooper Cara Dune, who had many appearances in The Mandalorian. However, after Disney has parted ways with Cara Dune’s actress, Gina Carano, the Rangers series is currently on hold indefinitely.
Despite all the speculations surrounding the future of The Mandalorian and its spin-off series, it is clear that its story is no longer heading in the direction of a faceless mercenary chasing bounties. The MandoVerse is constantly evolving and nothing is set in stone. Fans will just have to wait for Book of Boba Fett in December 2021 and season 3 of The Mandalorian in 2022.
