A New, Decade-Long 'Harry Potter' Series Will Air On HBO, Featuring A New Cast

As Warner Bros. looks to rebrand its HBO Max streaming platform as Max, the company also has plans to reboot the Harry Potter franchise. Starting out as a series of seven books by J.K. Rowling, the beloved characters quickly found their way to the big screen with eight films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint who grew up throughout the films.
Now, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has announced a green light for a new Harry Potter series on Max. The television series will focus on each of the seven books in more detail than the movies’ limited runtimes allowed for. The series will feature a new cast and will run over a period of ten years. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content shared his enthusiasm for the series, “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and [executive producer] J. K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

The author provided her view on the new series, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.”
Warner Bros. has committed to Game of Thrones-level spending on this new project in the obvious hope that his new series will be a defining experience for the next generation, much like the books and movies were for past generations. This new Harry Potter series will premiere sometime in 2024 or 2025.
