At the time of this writing, there are 11 days left until the premiere of the long-awaited (both anxious and excited) live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. There’s been a lot of press about the show’s impending release, and while the reaction to the information has not been looked at in a good light by all, Netflix is going all in on this show.

Recently, they released a short featurette that gave people a look behind the scenes and even a reveal of something not yet shown in the trailers. It’s a touching and emotional look at a show that was first announced back in 2018 and spent more than a year in post.

RELATED:

The featurette highlights each of the main cast talking about their experience on the show and trying to give insight into the motivation behind their characters. There are several shots of behind-the-scenes shots of Aang, Katara, Zuko, and even his father, Firelord Ozai, bending. One of the most touching moments of the clip was with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays Uncle Iroh. In a trembling voice, he describes what it was like for an actor of color to be in a series that is cast and crewed by nearly all people of Asian and Indigenous heritage, what that feels like for representation, and how it’s going to touch so many more people when they see that. It’s accompanied by several photos of the cast and crew, beaming with pride.

There was also a glimpse of characters not yet shown in one of the behind-the-scenes shots. As the featurette is wrapping up, there is a behind-the-scenes shot of a female airbender. The immediate reaction was to think this was Avatar Yangchen, the last airbending Avatar before Aang. Closer inspection reveals that it’s likely a female airbender from Aang’s time because there are Fire Nation soldiers around her. This seems more likely than for it to be Yangchen, especially because it was revealed that the airbender genocide at the hands of the Fire Nation will be shown for the first time.

Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres February 22 on Netflix.
