The wait is finally over. Sort of.

At the Ubisoft Forward event yesterday, Ubisoft unveiled what Assassin’s Creed Infinity actually was. Turns out, it was not another game, but more of a platform hub, seemingly similar to the hub Halo used to have. To kick it off, though, they announced two new Assassin’s Creed games in addition to Mirage coming next year: Codename: Red and Codename: Hexe.

Codename: Red was announced with a short video showing a red sky with a setting sun. As the video pans back, telltale Japanese architecture comes into view, and then a shinobi leaps up onto a roof in the center of the screen. The ninja comes to rest in the typical assassin style along a ridge on the roof, and then extends their hand to the side and the trademark wrist blade slinks out.

It’s been described so far as the next flagship game in the open-world RPG games, but not much else was revealed. It’s likely to be well received by fans, who have been clamoring for an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan for some time now. It’s a place and time that lends itself well to the gameplay style that has defined the franchise. While it is easy to imagine a game featuring a shinobi in feudal Japan, the game’s success will likely rely on a solid story.

There has been no information about a release date, and given Mirage is releasing next year, its likely to be at least two or three years out, if Ubisoft continues to follow their “every other year” formula.
