A Deep Dive On Mortis

The great animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars brought to fans many amazing stories within the Star Wars galaxy and explored a lot of the mythology itself. One of the great things we fans got to explore more of was the mysteries of the Force. To be more specific, the Ones.

“We are the ones who guard the power, we are the beginning, middle, and the end.”

-The Daughter

The Ones were introduced in season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The story of the Ones was broken into three episodes: episodes 15, 16, and 17. The story arc follows Anakin, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan as they venture into a mysterious planet called Mortis. On the planet, our heroes meet the Daughter, the Son, and the Father, three powerful beings who are interested in Anakin, and the prophecy of the Chosen One.

Our heroes are out through several test and visions, a very important moment of episode 15 is after Anakin sees his dead mother while trying to sleep. He then confronts the Father about the vision of his mother. Anakin accuses the Father of being a Sith, as he points his lightsaber right at the Father’s face. As the Father tells Anakin that he is neither Sith nor Jedi. He grabs the lightsaber’s blade with his bare hands, and turns Anakin’s saber off just with his hand. The Father explains to Anakin that he and his children are called Force wielders.

The Ones are the very embodiment of the Force. The Daughter represents the light side of the Force, the Son is the dark side itself, and the Father is the very physical representation of the Force. The planet of Mortis was called “the Force itself” by Obi-Wan, as he saw that the planet destroys itself during the night, and regenerates itself at sunrise. The planet’s Force presence is so strong thatObi-Wan's able to talk to his old master Qui-Gon Jinn.

The Ones can manipulate the Force like no other being in the galaxy. They are even considered celestials, and to some cultures, they are considered gods. These beings can change their physique to their will. They are also too powerful to be set free from Mortis, so they must be kept imprisoned by the Father on the planet itself. After the Son shows the future to Anakin, he breaks the law of the universe, and in an epic confrontation, all the Ones were killed using a special weapon found within the planet.

The Force is left out of balance after our heroes leave Mortis. Although the Ones are killed during the time of the Clone Wars, it is believed that only their physical form was destroyed, as they are celestial beings and cannot actually be killed. One bit of evidence that can prove the ones were seen as gods is when, in Star Wars Rebels, Emperor Palpatine discusses talks to one of his ministers about the mysterious Jedi temple found on Lothal. The temple had a very interesting mural which depicted the Daughter, the Son, and the Father, as mythical deities of the realm of the Force.

His excellency Emperor Palpatine refers to the Ones as “The Mortis Gods” when talking about the mural found in the Jedi temple. The mural itself is a gate to the realm of space and time, which is a type of realm of the Force. The full power of these beings is never shown, yet what we’ve seen from them is absolutely remarkable. Some fans even believe the Ones could be related to the Whills, or perhaps the Force Priestesses whom Yoda encountered at the end of The Clone Wars season 6.

The Force trio of the Ones shows us the many different aspects of the light side and the dark side of the Force, yet one of the most important things we explored in their arc is how powerful the Chosen One is and how dangerous his power is to the galaxy as well.
