Kathleen Kennedy Updates Fans on 'Lando' Series
In 2020, a cornucopia of Star Wars television was announced. One of the most exciting projects to come out of the announcements was Lando, a new series focusing on the titular smuggler. Fans have wondered what the show would entail since. When confirmed initially, the show didn't even have a lead actor attached to the project. Last week Kathleen Kennedy sat down with Cinema Blend to speak to them about the project.
When Kathleen Kennedy sat down with Law Sharma, of Cinema Blend for the interview, she clarified some things for fans. The most exciting confirmation was that Donald Glover is returning for a continuation of his take on the iconic role. And we couldn't be happier with the decision to bring Donald Glover back to Star Wars. However, fans of Glover's interpretation will have to wait for a while longer, Kennedy stated.

Kennedy revealed the only thing preventing Glover from returning is his schedule. She said that if there was anyone to ask, it was him. She added that it was not for lack of trying on Lucasfilm's part. Right now Glover has two projects ahead of him. Hopefully, according to Kathleen, he will be ready after these projects wrap up. Glover is appearing in Mr. & Mrs. Smith coming soon to Amazon Prime. As well as in February he completed the fourth and final season of FX's Atlanta. Glover is surely an incredibly busy man as an entertainer of all varieties.
For now, the series appears to be on hold until Donald Glover has time to focus his creative talents on bringing young Lando back to the screen. Given his performance in Solo, most fans would be glad to have him back. When Solo was released his performance stood out to critics and fans alike in a very good way. So it was no surprise in 2020 when Lando was teased as a future project, the only question was when we would see its release.
It is refreshing, however, to see an update at all. When Lando was announced without a star already cast, people had wondered if it would be a show starring Billy Dee Williams, the original actor for Lando. When there had been no updates on the series had concerned those of us who thought the original actor might return, especially given his age. But fans are left with only their ideas for what a series with an older Lando Calrissian would be up to post The Rise of Skywalker.
Though that doesn't mean there isn't meaningful ground for Glover to cover in his continuation of Lando. Glover has a lot of interesting history to work with for his show. In fact, given Lando Calrissian's rich life and the dangerous situations he can find himself in, it would be strange to forgo his history to tell his future first. For example, how exactly did Lando find himself the administrator of a highly lucrative Tibanna Gas mine on Cloud City? Even the question of how he procured the Millennium Falcon is unanswered. There are a lot of avenues for a series focused on a younger Calrissian to take us down.
What we do know about the series so far is that the director and writer for Dear White People, Justin Simien will be leading the show when it starts production. Sadly that detail is the extent of the knowledge available to anyone outside of Lucasfilm. It should still excite fans knowing that a Lando project is a matter of when not if. Luckily for all of us, there is a lot of content coming both on and off screens for fans of Star Wars in the coming years.
