Rumor: 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' Movie Set To Start Filming In 2022
Always in motion the future is, as a wise Jedi Master once said to his young Padawan on Dagobah so many films ago. With this in mind it seems that once again the future of Lucasfilm in film seems to be in motion as various films that were once scheduled for one year are being moved to another with new projects taking its place. Of course, nothing is concrete or set in stone at the moment. However, there certainly is movement behind the scenes in the walls of Lucasfilm. Things are about to get really interesting really soon.
According to The Direct, there is rumor going around that the movie Rogue Squadron is about to be delayed to the year 2024. In its place an Old Republic movie that has been in the works for a long time will be greenlit to move forward instead. This would be an interesting development if true since Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins has been anticipated since 2020 during the major Disney investors meeting. Though what is really interesting is the idea of an Old Republic movie being secretly in the works for quite some time with pieces of said story already being set in motion.

It would be fascinating if this is true. Much like Rogue Squadron, an Old Republic movie is something many fans have been asking for. The idea of several Jedi and Sith at the heights of their power combating for the fate of the galaxy with massive armies under their command is very tantalizing for fans.
Recently, Hollywood Reporter has reported that Rogue Squadron will be delayed indefinitely. The official reason for this is scheduling. This directly confirms the first part of the rumor concerning the delay of Rogue Squadron. However, the other part of the rumor concerning the Old Republic has not been confirmed as of yet.
The Old Republic is an interesting time in the history of Star Wars. It covers quite a large period of time, thousand among thousand of years, in fact. During this time, the galaxy saw the origins of the Jedi, the wars against the Sith. It was a time of great feats accomplished by Force users, and mighty wars started by them. However, it is unlikely that they will just adapt the popular games Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic if they were to ever produce an Old Republic movie of some kind. Popular characters like Revan, Darth Malgus, Darth Vitiate, and Bastila, probably will not appear or even be mentioned in the movie. The story will most likely focus on new characters set in the ancient past, perhaps battling the Sith and something else.
Of course, it is always possible that they base these films or films of the game and have it tie into the story of Revan, Bastila and the rest. These games are very popular and thus have a large following among the fanbase. However, it is hard to say if they can garner the same appeal with the general audience. It is unlikely in the wider sense since the general public does not really know what the Old Republic is or even who those characters are. The movie will have to re-introduce them to that era or in some cases just introducing the idea in general.
Whatever the case, it seems that once again the future of Star Wars on film is in flux. However, it is important to remember that a movie should not be rushed especially if it means having poor quality. Rushing it can never be a good thing when it comes to storytelling. Sometimes it is important to take time and give us the best movie in the galaxy far, far away.
