Sydney Sweeney Opens Up About Her New Marvel Role

Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in Madame Web

Following the release of Morbius, Sony Entertainment Studios is continuing to build upon its Spider-Man Universe. So far, this universe includes characters such as Venom, Morbius, and soon Kraven the Hunter. Sony has also announced that they are releasing a new entry into the seriesIt has been confirmed that Dakota Johnson will be playing Madame Web, and her first co-star will be Sydney Sweeney.

While it is unknown what role Sweeney will play in the film, she is not completely new to the Marvel world, in a manner of speaking. She has appeared next to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Zendaya (MJ) in the award-winning series Euphoria. In a recent interview with Variety, Sydney Sweeney spoke about how she is preparing for her new role and her relationship with Marvel properties:

“I’ve been ordering a bunch of comic books. There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a really big fan of all the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. “I’ve grown up watching them all, and I’ve been engulfed in the entire world my entire life, so being able to be a part of that is such an incredible, incredible thing.”

She also explained her process in choosing the next role:

“I like to try and find characters that are challenging for me in multiple different ways, and are completely different from one another. I want to continue to shock people with the characters that I play when they don’t expect that I would choose that next.”

Since the announcement that Sydney Sweeney will be joining the cast of Madame Web, fans have begun to speculate on what role she might play. While there are many possibilities, some of the most recognizable names include Mary Jane Watson, Spider Gwen, and Black Cat. The possibility of Sweeney playing Mary Jane Watson is interesting as the current Marvel Cinematic Universe version of MJ is not actually Mary Jane Watson. Another interesting possibility is Spider-Woman or Jessica Drew. Given the wide range of roles that Sweeney has played thus far in her acting career, she will be successful in whatever role she is cast in.

Sweeny had appeared in television series such as Heroes, Criminal Minds, and Grey’s Anatomy. In 2018 she played Eden Spencer in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. She has been part of the main cast of Euphoria since 2019 where she plays Cassie Howard. While this will be Sweeney’s first role in a superhero film, her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Euprhoria should serve her well in her unannounced role in the upcoming movie.

Sweeney will enter Sony’s Spider-Man universe at a very crucial time. While the series has grossed over 1.4 billion dollars worldwide, the movies have struggled at times to garner positive reviews. Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage each earned thirty and fifty-eight percent, respectively, with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Sony’s latest production Morbius earned sixteen percent with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Sony will eagerly wait for the audience’s reception of Kraven the Hunter, which is set to release on January 13, 2023.

The character of Madame Web has long been associated with Spider-Man. She first appeared in print in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 and continued to be his ally throughout the series. Madame Web remains in the early stages of pre-production, but fans of Marvel should be excited about this casting news!
